Hongshanornis war ein früher Vogel und von einem fast vollständigen Skelett bekannt. An dem Fossil sind auch noch Abdrücke der Federn zu erkennen. Das gefundene Exemplar besaß einen zahnlosen Schnabel, jedoch sind Zahnbuchsen im Kiefer vorhanden, bei dem Fossil wurden aber keine Zähne entdeckt. Daher ist nicht genau bekannt, ob Hongshanornis wirklich einen zahnlosen Schnabel wie die modernen Vögel besaß. Dieser kleine Verwandte der modernen Vögel hatte lange Beine und kurze Flügel. Forscher nehmen an, daß Hongshanornis in Uferzonen und Sümpfen lebte, wo er im flachen Wasser watete und nach Nahrung suchte.
