Sinopterus ist von einem fast vollständigen Skelett aus der Jiufotang Formation in China bekannt. Er besaß einen proportional großen Schädel, hatte einen vogelartigen spitzen Schnabel, auf dem sich ein lange knöchernen Kamm befand, der vom Zwischenkiefer bis zum Ende des Schädels verlief und noch ein wenig darüber nach hinten hinausragte. Die Entdecker vermuten, dass Sinopterus ein Allesfresser war. Es ist der erste, älteste und vollständigste Fund eines Tapejariden außerhalb Brasiliens.
